Posted April 19, 2020 05:24:10After discovering that a black student had braided his hair and then braided hers, a social media backlash erupted, with many commenting that he was a slut and a creep.
As a black female student in the U.K., I was horrified by this behaviour and feel so embarrassed by it.
But I also felt it was a form of social justice, and I thought it was worth sharing to let the world know that black girls can do this too!
This is not just a Black girl thing.
It is a black feminist thing.
I have never seen a black man doing this, and it was absolutely unacceptable.
But I didn’t want to be alone in my outrage, so I made a video.
In it, a black friend of mine (or friend) takes on the role of the black girl bowing her head in submission and then braid her hair into a beautiful braided bun.
In the video, the friend shows the girl her braids in the mirror, and she looks genuinely embarrassed.
I then ask her if she wants to continue braiding her hair, and the girl replies that she’s ready.
The girl then turns to her parents and asks if she’s alright.
The girl’s mother says yes and then tells her to go back to her room.
The mother tells her daughter to come back tomorrow morning, but the girl insists she’ll wait.
When the mother returns, the girl is still in her braided braid.
She says, “I just want to show you that you can do it too.”
